Man Up!

Man Up!

Men are great skin care clients, if one understands what they want and need from professional point of view. Here are 10 facts to better help this demographic.

-FACT 1-

Men are actually very interested in having great skin. Everyone looks in the mirror and everyone sees things they want to change. Men aren't any different. They notice wrinkles, aging, sagging, and pimples. An aesthetician works with them on a feasible plan to make those changes.

-FACT 2-

Most problems with men's skin revolve around beard and hair growth issues. Men need to practice shaving correctly and taking care of their skin before and after shaving.

-FACT 3-

Beard areas are sensitive. Upward movements using implements such as cloths or sponges are uncomfortable. Neck areas are especially sensitive to this. Good aesthetician uses different application techniques with a male client.

-FACT 4-

Men do not want to smell like roses. When treating men at SPA, aesthetician uses either fragrance-free products or products with gender-neutral scents.

-FACT 5-

Most men have combination skin. It can often be dehydrated, but is rarely alipidic. Stay away from heavy creams and thick, pasty products. Water-based and hydrating formulas - rather than oils and emollients - are ideal choices.

-FACT 6-

Men worry about ingrown hairs, large and clogged pores, and wrinkles. These are three areas to address. Thorough deep-cleansing treatments with gentle extraction are popular. A good SPA professional won't forget the finishing massage strokes - men love massage!

-FACT 7-

Suggesting products to men is not complicated. Men prefer scrubs, shaving-related products, lightweight hydrators (make sure those have sunscreen), and eye creams. Easily absorbable products for both treatment and home care suit best.

-FACT 8-

Men like easy-to-follow plans. Keep the home care simple, like an instruction sheet. It's better to keep it to 3-4 steps. Extra steps can always added on, if necessary.

-FACT 9-

Men frequently have back skin issues. Back acne and breakout-prone skin require professional treatment. SPA “Bakcial” is a great service for the hard-to-reach area. It includes cleansing, extractions, masking and massage!

-FACT 10-

Men spend money on their skin products, but they are not always aware of which SPA services can help them. Aesthetician is not only a consultant, but a friendly educator!

Shave Correctly Client Tips!

This easy-to-follow step-by-step procedure helps to achieve calmer, smoother, and clearer skin, and avoid shaving irritation and beard bumps.

Always cleanse the face first with a low-foaming cleanser. Rinse thoroughly with room-temperature water.

If using a manual razor, make sure the blades are fresh and sharp. Use an unscented shave cream. Fragrance can be an irritant to freshly shaved skin. Apply the shave cream liberally to the skin.

A single-blade razor is a better choice if the gentleman has a tendency toward ingrown hairs.

Shave in the direction of hair growth. Carefully check different areas of the face to see in which direction the hair grows. Different areas of the face can have different growth patterns.

If you don't think you get a close enough shave when you shave with the growth pattern, shave twice. Shaving against the growth pattern does give a closer shave, but can definitely cause the hair to be cut at angles so hairs can easily become ingrown, causing infected follicles (beard bumps), folliculitis, inflammation, redness, pimples, and possible scarring.

If using an electric razor, the skin should be completely dry before shaving. Shave following the razor manufacturer's directions. Again, you may need to follow the pattern twice to get a closer shave.

After shaving with either method, spray the face thoroughly with an alcohol-free toner. This one step makes a huge difference in diminishing the likelihood of shaving irritation and ingrown hairs.

If the skin is very sensitive or reddens easily, apply a soothing serum with ingredients like green tea, allantoin, witch hazel or licorice extracts.

For ingrown hairs, apply a specialty product containing Salicylic Acid, Sulfur with Resorcinol, or Benzoyl Peroxide. Sulfur masks are also helpful in drying up lesions.

A lightweight SPF 15 or higher sunscreen moisturizer ought to finish the morning routine during summer. If the skin is oily, make sure the sunscreen is a matte-finish moisture product.
